LEDGE LIGHT INFORMATION
"My business is named after Ledge Light Lighthouse, which I am fortunate to see when I look out my window.
It stands solidly in the middle of the Thames River, welcoming all of the boat traffic into New London Harbor and
saluting as they leave. It is a unique shape for a lighthouse, being squat and square with a little mini light
tower at the top which looks out-of-proportion to the massive building it sits upon. When I did a little research
I learned that this lighthouse was built in 1909 and designed in what’s called the French Second Empire style.
So much for me calling it squat and square. It is, indeed a lofty design!"
"Like all lighthouses, Ledge Light is reported to be haunted. In this case by a former lighthouse keeper, Ernie. When he
learned that his wife had supposedly run off with the captain of the Block Island ferry, Ernie ended his life. He either fell from
the roof of the lighthouse or jumped, depending on who is telling the story. Jeremy D’Entremont, author of “The Lighthouses
of Connecticut” has said that doors at Ledge Light have been known to open and close mysteriously; decks have been
swabbed themselves, although the lighthouse is now automated; and the foghorn seems to turn on and off for no reason.
D’Entremont spent a night on Ledge Light and he believes a “spirit” is there."
"So there is a mystique about the lighthouse I see every day. Yes, it looks different from what I thought lighthouses should
look like but, by taking the time to research and get to know the lighthouse, I realize I have a special neighbor in my
“front yard” and it is probably haunted—by the spirit of pride for its uniqueness and its special qualities. I like to think the
clients I work with are special and unique too, with wonderful qualities that may need to be discovered and “repairs” that
may need to be made, but one-of-a-kind like my lighthouse."
